I noticed what looks like a contradiction on Zuidwijk's site. In the ESP-Home configuration FAQ, the RX port is D7 (thus should be using Software Serial) as you mentioned earlier.

But he also recommends ESP-Link as an alternative firmware. As far as I know, ESP-Link seems to use the hardwired RX port on the ESP8266 ...

If you have not done so yet, re-flash with ESP-Link. There is a debug window that could help you sorting out issues.

I have build also P1 interfaces (7er.nl) with ESP easy that works with Domoticz.
The hardware you build specify the setting of your ESP Easy.
Marcel has his own protocol and didn't make the software on his interface.
You can use hard or software protocol and if hardware based then you have to select your IO port for control.
So far as I now he's not using the standard RX port.
It's special made for Home Assistant not for Domoticz
If you flash it with esp-link it should also work on Domoticz.

If only the documentation on Zuidwijk's site would be half decent, I wouldn't have lost multiple evenings looking into this.

Nothing is mentioned on the website that you should neglect ESPhome (which comes standard on the slimmelezer) and immediatly flash ESP-link if you want to use it with Domoticz: https://www.zuidwijk.com/automation-integration/
