I've sorted this out for now. I can connect to https://[my external IP forwarded to internal ip]:[my external port forwarded to 443]
Only thing left is indeed that it is a self signed certificate that is not trusted. Because...whoooo....internet...whooo....be afraid...
For now I am going to leave it as such. My data is not sent in plain text, so I am ok.

Hi,
Just adding for anyone searching. I'm on Windows 10 running Domoticz as a service and all I had to do was open port 443 in Windows Defender Firewall in advanced settings > inbound rules
I am also using a cloudflare certificate using the above method so I can use the cloudflare tunnel strict mode for additional security.
