Full backup

Post by hestia »

Hi
I have a Z-Wave Plus Z-Stick Gen5 with domoticz and I'd like to know what to backup to able to make a full restore in case of issue (loss of the stick and / or the hard drive).
I read several topics and it seems that the z-wave network is on the stick, but I also read that it is duplicated in domoticz.
My goal would be to make a automated full BK of the system monthly for instance, the DB is already hourly and I copy the domoticz folder to a NAS daily (with another DB BK)

To backup the stick, I only found a Windows tool, and as I'm with RPI, and so linux, it is only possible manually because I'll need to remove the stick from the RPI to plug it on a PC :-(

On the other hand, if I want to change the stick for another brand, would it be possible directly thank to the ozwcache ?

Hey Hestia,

Just read your post and I think I found a good backup solution for you:
 How-to: Backup Domoticz with Duplicati
 https://www.sancla.com/domoticz/how-to- ... duplicati/

This way, not only can you make a daily backup to your NAS system but also to a cloud provider as Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.
Let me know if you need any more help ;) ...

Tip!
Do not forget to enable the automatic backup in Domoticz

@hestia,

I am also very interested to know how to backup the Zwave stick automatically. Right now I am doing with the windows tool once every few months.
Also good question how to restore zwave network topology to a stick from another vendor.

Thanks Sancla for your answer.
I had a look at Duplicati and it seems to me that I could only make a backup of specific folders and not a full backup of the hard drive.
For specific folder I've already got a simple script that runs every night, included the folders of the automatic backup

I'd like to improve this backup with 2 points:
1/ make a full backup of the hard drive, perhaps something like
https://www.hackviking.com/single-board ... ete-image/
2/ secure the z-wave network

That's a great backup script, didn't know about that one yet, thanks! But indeed, Duplicati does not provide a full system level backup. For that you need to work with either such a script combined with a local NAS of with an imaging solution.
Duplicati does however offer you access to cloud providers, giving you a free/cheap off-site backup solution.
Perhaps we could combine best of both worlds...

For the zwave part, I know others that are using multiple zwave sticks. That also provides in turn a certain redundancy. Would that also be an option?

Tests done so far:

1/ make a full backup of the hard drive like https://www.hackviking.com/single-board ... ete-image/

=> in the crontab and I could restart another server with another drive :-)
=> I had bought a new z-wave stick, but it remained empty on this new config :-(

2/ secure the z-wave network
=> I've made a backup of the active z-wave stick (Z-Stick Gen 5) with the tool (zwave_500.exe) on Windows and restored it on the new one. I could find my z-wave network, not so bad... The issue is that I could not automate this z-wave backup because I'm on RPI instead of Windows :-(
