Working on a few how-to's

Post by sancla »

Hey guys,

I have been working on a few how-to's recently and I was wondering if I could ask for some feedback.
A couple of years back I started with domotica and Domoticz and since then, well, things got out of hand.... :o 8-)
I have tried several platforms but I keep coming back to Domoticz since it's so user friendly.

With the knowledge I gained so far I am making a couple of how-to's for the Domoticz community.
This is my way of doing something back...

I remembered that in the beginning, I sometimes missed some clear steps to realize my goals.
And so I hope to fill in some gaps and provide everybody with a full and clear set of instructions that are complete and verified.

I am looking for some feedback about your thoughts of these how-to's, how I can improve them and if there are any requests for new ones.
For the roapmap, still working and thinking on a few such as:

- Scripts Blockly, Python and Lua
- Complete backup solution to preferably a cloud provider (not just the database), with restore guide
- MQTT with autodiscovery
- Presence detection ping/bluetooth
- Google Home
- RFlink over Ethernet and wifi
- New theme for my site (current one has no good overview)
- Integrating Arduino's with an ESP-01
- etc

I hope these instructions can contribute to new Domoticz explorers:

Hi @sancla, I looked at your how-to's and really like them. They provide enough details to make them very useful and lay-out / readability are excellent.
With regards to your question for other topics to include, my suggestion is to see what is already in the wiki and if you miss something or think it can use some improvement add it.

Did you consider the option to integrate your how-to's in any way or form with the domoticz wiki ? That would guarantee that the availability and maintenance of the information in the how-to's does not depend on one person.

Thx for the great work !

Great to have plain and simple how-to’s.
Don’t know if you have seen https://github.com/rwbl/domoticz-homea ... n-workbook? Maybe you can use info from here if you create new pages.
For Dashticz I would suggest not to link to the wiki anymore because that is not updated for a long time. The readthedocs link is kept up to date.
Blah blah blah

Thank you for the fantastic feedback waaren and HansieNL, It's giving me a smile on my face :D !
My goal is to keep them accessible so that others can discover Domoticz in a simple way.
Basing on both your feedback, it seems that I have taken the right path with the how-to's.

Regarding transferring the how-to's to the Domoticz wiki, I have to think about that.
The Domoticz wiki has not always been to most reliable source of information nor a complete at that one, and publishing there does not directly guarantee availability and maintenance. The Domoticz wiki is currently not always that accessible or easy to navigate.
Publishing these how-to's on my own website gives me more freedom without stepping onto any toes.
I fully understand that by contributing to the Domoticz wiki I can make a difference, but I am not sure yet.
I think I will come back to that later. It is a constructive idea anyway and I like to be a team player by nature :) ...

What a fantastic gem you give me!
I think it's a great initiative, one I can fully endorse and support.
If the author agrees I think this can provide a valuable resource for future how-to's...
For the Dashticz Domoticz wiki link, seems your right, just removed them from the how-to, thanks for the heads-up!
