Homey kickstarter

Post by Golfman »

Don't get me wrong, I really do like the setup I currently got running: PI + Z-wave stick and multiple door contacts.
Thinking about expanding this with Rfxcom for light control and maybe even heating.
Why Rfxcom, well simply more light switches and thermostat options which are also a bit cheaper in the end.

But then.... reading about this kickstarter project called Homey.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/at ... -your-home

Is this going to be something to look out for?
I know, it's still in the early stages and projected delivery is now June 2015 which easily can be postponed to a later date as is known with kickstarter projects.

But if ordering now as being an early bird I think you get quite a good deal given all the supported devices / protocols.

What do you guys think?

This bad boy appears to have the backers excited too but they have some customers hacked off with continuing delays.

I don't like that the data are in the cloud. I want to own and control my (personal) data. Homey's data are stored on data centers so the big data (if Homey become's an hit) means big money.

So an speech interface for Domoticz or Homey connected to Domoticz would be an ultimate solution

Agree about the data in the cloud is not the way to go forward, far from even. Try to stay away from it as much as possible (although with an Android phone, gmail etc that isn't really happening to start with).

But was more thinking about the fact that Homey will run on a Pi as well an with the amount of sensors thrown into the package.
I got my Domoticz currently running on a Pi so in theory it should be possible to run Domoticz on the Homey hardware.
If you add up the hardware and sensors separately the early bird deal is for what I can see quite a good deal...apart from the fact that it isn't available yet of course ;)
And I do realize that for hardware prizes might drop overtime as well.

The pi is only used for the prototypes, the final product will use an industrial board. Which is smart because a pi will not be a reliable controller for that many transceivers. I'm a bit sceptic about this product, I often see students at my university produce a glowing sphere and go all enthusiastic about how it will control your home where in reality it takes a google or apple to really achieve that. When I see how much work goes into maintaining even a 433mhz module like rfxcom, or the openzwave library, imagine the issues a device supporting 8 protocols at the same time will have. I think the future will be in a device that supports one protocol that is supported by all home appliance vendors. Its good to see the Homey reaching its goal already but I'm afraid it will not be a viable product.

Yep, I mean an app to connect, something like the Domoticz Android version.
There's an api available for Homey.
Dutch voice control is possible, but doesn't function as good as English at the moment.

I,m playing with Homey now for about a month. I use it mostly to trigger some Domoticz switches by voice.
Domoticz is rock solid, Homey is just in beta, so I'll keep Domoticz running as backup in the future.
I'm wondering what is possible with the Domoticz /Homey combination in about half a year.

Ja, spreekt Nederlands / Yes Speaks Dutch
I use a HTTP App for Homey and can activate some switches by voice. For example the cleaning person just have to say "Ik kom poetsen" and all lights switches on and thermostat heats up. When she's finished she just have to say that she leaves and everything is switched off.

Here some links to get an idea of what is possible:
https://www.athom.com/en/support/
https://apps.athom.com/
https://forum.athom.com/
I use the HTTP request flow cards app to trigger my Domotic switches or from Domotics trigger a Homey switch.

@ Hansie...

See this all..
Only, why should I buy the homey..[ in your opinion ]
Al this thing is possible with Domoticz.
Only speak is perhaps a missing thing.. In domoticz, only it can also work....
And the not used Zigbee..

It has 8 wireless technologiesector onboard. https://www.athom.com/en/homey/technology/
Just connect the wireless hardware to the Homey and go... At least as everything is working. It's still in beta and I think it's gonna take some time to fix everything for a retail launch.
I also think it can be a great piece of hardware to help disabled persons. That's why I'm very interested in Homey.

Only The price for a Beta.... ;)
And it is closed.... :x
The plugins they use now, are also in different opensource projects.
and there are more options...

I still follow Homey, only i think i wait, to buy it...

Is there a Timeplan that the Homey developers think they go to a stable? [ Domoticz way, stable or Beta ]
